The Salvation Army Responds in Dark of Night to Yazoo City, MS

Jackson, MS –  The Salvation Army of Metro Jackson, Miss. is responding to the scene of a tornado in Yazoo City, Mississippi.  Beginning around 8:00  P.M. a strong super cell thunderstorm crossed the Mississippi River and began dropping severe weather on a line stretching across the state striking the downtown area of Yazoo City, Miss.

Initial reports of widespread power outages, downed trees and power lines, and structural damage in central parts of Yazoo City. Additionally, the Yazoo County Courthouse roof has been reported damaged.

One mobile feeding unit and a staff of five from The Salvation Army of Metro Jackson has been deployed to provide mass feeding, hydration, and pastoral care to residents still recovering from a massive tornado this past May and now forced to deal with more storm damage.

With widespread damage and power outages coupled with the continuing severe weather throughout the evening, The Salvation Army’s Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi Division has placed all disaster units on alert for possible response.

 “This community (Yazoo City) has seen so many lives ripped apart by an act of nature. The Salvation Army will continue to provide an act of God in serving the residents of still recovering from the spring storms and now faced with more recovery,” stated Captain Ken Chapman of The Salvation Army in Jackson. “ Our hope is that through the love of Christ the emotional and physical scars can begin to heal.”
