Refuge from the Storm in Augusta Georgia

Augusta, Georgia (September 12, 2017) – The threat of a category 5 hurricane is enough to unnerve anyone in its projected path of destruction. That’s why Regina Scott and her family made the decision to evacuate Brunswick, Georgia.

It was on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 2:00 p.m. that Regina Scott, her son, daughter and 8 grandchildren had to quickly pack and make the trek from Brunswick to Augusta, Georgia. The plan was to stay with Regina’s brother who lives in Augusta, but after arriving it became clear that there would not be enough room to house the large family.

After looking around town Regina realized she and her family had nowhere to go. “We had no place to stay,” recalls Regina, “So my daughter googled shelters around Augusta and ended up finding this one.”

The shelter Regina’s daughter found is located at Patriots Park, a shelter that happened to be partnered with the Salvation Army.

When asked about their time in the shelter Regina said, “I’m thankful that we are all together and safe. The food was great. The Salvation Army did a wonderful job. They give you breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are snacks and activities all day. Bedtime is at 10:00 p.m., but you can still stay up if you want to in the dining area to talk and play games. They have just been wonderful. The kids think they are on vacation. They are having a wonderful time and everyone has been so nice.”

Regina and her family are thankful for a safe place to stay, as Brunswick is not expected to open until Thursday. “Overall, it’s been a great experience considering it’s my first time staying in a shelter,” said Regina.

For many like Regina, The Salvation Army may be their only shelter from the storm in their time of need. And for those who seek shelter, it comes as a warm comfort to know there will always be a place of safe refuge for them called The Salvation Army.
