Daily Update: The Salvation Army of Georgia’s Response to Hurricane Helene

ATLANTA, GA (October 2, 2024) – With over 500,000 individuals still suffering the loss of power, phone signal, water, and/or gas, The Salvation Army continues to activate more Emergency Disaster Feeding Units across Georgia to serve communities devastated by the storm. Three Incident Management Teams (IMTs) have been deployed to Vidalia, Alma and Valdosta by The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS).

The Salvation Army is working with numerous County Emergency Management locations, Southern Baptist and other partner agencies to most effectively reach and serve all who are in need in the wake of the storm’s destruction.

In addition to the three aforementioned areas, The Salvation Army EDS have deployed 26 mobile feeding units to the most impacted counties surrounding Savannah, Augusta, Elberton, Valdosta, Vidalia, and Waycross, encompassing over 23 counties in Georgia.  Since the storm’s initial impact, The Salvation Army has provided over 40,500 meals, 8,200 meal boxes, and 37,000 snacks and drinks, 1,200 food boxes and 1,550 cases of water have also been distributed.

The Salvation Army is thankful for the numerous volunteers working around the clock who demonstrate the compassion and commitment necessary to meet the needs of those affected. In times of disaster, The Salvation Army is a trusted responder. With the generous support of the community, The Salvation Army meets the immediate needs of those affected by disasters.
