The best way to help after a disaster is to make a financial contribution to the charity of your choice. Monetary donations allow The Salvation Army and other charities the flexibility to quickly and efficiently meet the immediate needs of disaster survivors without incurring many of the costs associated with sorting, packing, transporting and distributing donated goods.

Donating Goods or Supplies

In some disasters, The Salvation Army will appeal to people and businesses for donations of specific goods that can then be distributed to disaster survivors.

Please … before beginning any collection effort, contact your local Salvation Army to confirm the need. Get precise information about what products are needed. Consider shipping arrangements; most charities do not have the resources to arrange transportation. Any goods that are sent must be sorted and appropriately packed, palletized and shrink-wrapped before being shipped to the disaster area.

Donors should be wary of anyone who claims that "everything is needed." Communities hit by a disaster can be quickly overwhelmed by well-intentioned, but uncoordinated, shipments of donated goods and often do not have the time, manpower or money to dispose of unneeded product.

Used Clothing, Furniture and Cars

It is extremely rare that used clothing, furniture and motor vehicles are needed during a disaster response. However, these gifts are vitally important to supporting the day-to-day work of your local Salvation Army. Please consider giving these items to support Salvation Army programs within your local community.

To schedule a pick-up of used clothing, furniture, or motor vehicles, call 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825) to arrange a pick-up or to find the nearest drop-off location.
