Second Harvest of the Big Bend Offers Key Resources to Salvation Army Relief

Tallahassee, FL (September 6, 2016) - Having served more than 7,000 meals in the Tallahassee area since Hurricane Hermine ripped through Gadsden, Leon and Wakulla Counties, The Salvation Army is grateful for community partners such as Second Harvest of the Big Bend.

Donating more than 4,000 lbs. of food, Second Harvest has also opened their warehouse allowing The Salvation Army to stage water and clean-up kits prior to distribution throughout the Army's state disaster response efforts.

"It is important to be able to offer families a warm meal that's been cooked with love. When you are without power, you are cut-off from basic services. I love being there to meet needs, and we can do that when our partners and friends like Second Harvest of the Big Bend work with us," said Lt. Ryan Meo of The Salvation Army of Tallahassee.

Families like the Mills, who have been without power since Hermine made landfall, are thankful for The Salvation Army's mobile feeding site, giving the family of five an opportunity to receive a hot meal, cold water and encouragement before Lt. Meo stopped and joined hands with the family to pray. The Nichols couple was more concerned about getting meals for their granddaughter and her family after Hermine dropped a tree right through the center of her home.

The Salvation will continue to serve as utility companies work to restore power in the Tallahassee area. The Salvation Army is serving meals across the state with 18 mobile feeding units. As of September 5, The Salvation Army has provided a total of 9,898 meals, 9,806 drinks, 7,808 snacks, 1,049 Bibles, 371 clean-up kits, 252 cases of water, and Spiritual Care to 603 residents.

The best way to help those impacted by Hurricane Hermine is to make a financial contribution. Monetary donations allow disaster responders to immediately meet specific needs of disaster survivors.
