The Salvation Army Assists Flood Survivors in Breaux Bridge & St. Martinville LA

LAFAYETTE, LA (September 10, 2016) – The Salvation Army of Lafayette is assisting two local communities in their flood relief efforts.  The City of Breaux Bridge had minor flood damage, but is surrounded by affected areas. In response, they have organized their efforts to help serve their neighbors in need.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the volunteerism of people in the area. I am glad to have the opportunity to partner with an organization like The Salvation Army. It’s an organization I’ve respected all of my life,” said Ricky Calais, Mayor of Breaux Bridge. “Thank you to The Salvation Army for sharing supplies with us. We will make sure they get to the folks that need them.”

The City of St. Martinville is still working through flood recovery in the area. “We are going to deliver the supplies directly to families house to house. We will make sure that all supplies The Salvation Army are sharing with us, will go to families in need,” said Thomas Nelson, Mayor of St. Martinville.  “We only had small areas that were affected and we have had our hands full. About half of the residents affected by the flood still need assistance.”

“The Salvation Army is blessed to share food boxes, generously donated by our friends at Midwest Food Bank, and clean-up kits with the cities of Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville.  They know the families in their city with the most need and will make sure to assist families most affected in their communities,” said Captain Mark Gilliam, Incident Commander of The Salvation Army Disaster Response Team in Lafayette.

The Salvation Army in Lafayette operates a homeless shelter with 31 beds, and offers a soup kitchen that feeds about 150 per day. They also operate a Family Thrift Store that helps others in the community by providing gently used items for sale at affordable prices. The Salvation Army offers a myriad of other services and partners with other social service agencies and organizations in the community.
