(Canton, Ill.--Nov. 17, 2016)  The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Response has been on the scene in downtown Canton after a gas main exploded, killing one man, injuring 11 others and leveling a building there on Wednesday evening. Police evacuated all buildings within a two block radius of the explosion, leaving many people temporarily homeless.

Canton Corps Officer Lt. Sarah Eddy responded immediately to provide hydration and snacks. By 7 pm, a Canteen from Galesburg arrived along with other EDS teams from Peoria and stayed on the scene overnight to distribute drinks and snacks to Ameren Illinois Utility workers, fire and police personnel.

“We are saddened by this tragedy, but want people to know that we are here to help,” said Lt. Sarah Eddy, Corps Officer for the Canton Salvation Army.

Last night, 130 people were served meals and hydration. The Canton Corps was also utilized as a shelter overnight and EDS teams from Canton and Peoria will be staying throughout the day into tomorrow.  Meal plans include serving approximately 200 people today.

“Certainly in times like this, we want to devote as much attention as we can to helping those in our community affected by the explosion and the aftermath,” said Lt. Eddy.
