Dallas, Texas (April 17, 2017) - Salvation Amy Service Unit volunteers in Dimmitt, Texas, were called upon over the weekend to support emergency first responders in their community following powerful storms.

One storm system spawned multiple tornadoes with as many as five confirmed touch downs around the small panhandle city of Dimmit. Coordinating with the local Sheriff, volunteers from The Salvation Army Service Unit provided support and refreshment to local law enforcement and first responders. More than 100 homes were without power and several structures and vehicles were damaged by strong winds, hail, and flooding.

“One of the strengths of the Service Extension program in Texas is that we can quickly mobilize local disaster volunteers in small communities,” said Alvin Migues, Emergency Disaster Services Director for the Texas Division. “It is important to have trained volunteers on hand locally to respond in the hours immediately following an incident. We are so thankful for our Service Unit volunteers and their continued dedication and commitment to serve.”

Following a damage assessment additional Salvation Army response in Dimmit was not required.
