The Salvation Army: Here to Serve

Jacksonville, FL (September 20, 2017) - Disaster does not choose who it strikes. It affects the rich, the poor, the old, the young. Since Hurricane Irma barreled through Florida, The Salvation Army has served more than 18,000 meals to people in the northeast part of the state. But 18,000 is just a number; there is a story behind every meal. Perhaps it fed a first responder keeping communities safe during the storm. Or a storm survivor, digging through the ruins of their home. Or maybe it fed a person in a forgotten community without power.

Behind every meal is an army of disaster workers—Salvation Army officers, employees, and trained volunteers who are ready to drop everything to provide help and hope to people in times of desperate need. This army serves through The Salvation Army, but their commitment is in Jesus Christ. Each meal is served it as if it was served to the Lord. His love is shown through the compassionate care given to every man, woman, and child who comes for help.

Power is being rapidly restored and households are beginning to recover from Hurricane Irma, but The Salvation Army’s response isn’t ending anytime soon. Individuals are being connected to their local Salvation Army for their everyday needs and for comfort and care. Salvation Army officers are pastors and physical and spiritual care is the core of who we are and what we do.

In the years to come, The Salvation Army will carry out its mission to meet human needs in the name of Jesus Christ in Florida and throughout the world. We are here to serve every precious soul who is in crisis, whether it is a personal crisis such as a job loss or crisis caused by a disaster. We will do this until we are no longer needed.
