Salvation Army Provides Showers in the Aftermath of Hurricane Florence

New Bern, N.C. (September 28, 2018) In times of disaster, The Salvation Army mobilizes personnel and equipment to serve in the aftermath of storms. Often known for providing food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care, other equipment is also available depending on the need of the community.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, Craven and Pamlico Counties set up four emergency shelters for people impacted by the storm.  Not only are hundreds of individuals and families displaced, but many have also lost all their belongings.   At the request of Craven County, a Salvation Army Shower unit from Florida was brought in to provide the opportunity for refreshing showers to people who are staying at the Vanceboro Farm Life Elementary school’s shelter.  To date, 891 showers have been provided.

The Salvation Army is honored to be able to provide these survivors with the opportunity for a warm, refreshing shower and a small bit of comfort to those who have lost their homes because of the hurricane.  The Salvation Army’s founder, William Booth, started with the idea of “Soup, Soap and Salvation” for those with no place to go in the dark, dangerous streets of London in 1865.

The effects of Hurricane Florence could last for a long time.  Many survivors will need help getting back on their feet and bringing a sense of “normalcy” to their lives over the next few weeks and months.  The best way to help survivors is through financial contributions.  This allows disaster responders to meet the needs as they vary from family to family.
