The Salvation Army Offers Afghan Evacuees Acts of Compassion

Washington, DC - As the nearly 1,000 Afghan evacuees arrived in the Washington, DC, region late Friday night and early Saturday morning, August 20 and 21, they were greeted by dozens of welcoming faces and support groups, including among them The Salvation Army. Major Donald Wilson, Corps Officer at The Salvation Army of Fairfax, received a call from Virginia Emergency Management officials requesting support for the Afghan men, women, and children who fled their homes with only the clothes they were wearing. The Salvation Army provided critical and much-needed emergency nutrition and supplies to address the immediate concerns of our global neighbors, including food, water, snacks, baby products, and personal hygiene. Here is a snapshot of the service provided by The Salvation Army of Fairfax: 

• 1,645 bottles of water
• 1,244 snacks
• 123 fruit drinks
• 15 gallons of milk
• 164 canned food items
• 435 personal hygiene items
• 856 diapers
• 45 baby items
• Ten small baby blankets
• 14 cloth masks
