Portland, ME (September 2, 2011) - While Salvation Army canteens continue serving in the communities of Rutland, Plymouth, Tyson and Ludlow, VT, a canteen from Massachusetts has arrived to the town of Waterbury and will start assisting families Saturday morning.
Since the canteens arrived on Tuesday, August 30th The Salvation Army has been able to provide 2,368 meals and snacks to residents affected by Tropical Storm Irene, which caused damage of historic proportions in Vermont. In addition, Salvation Army officers and volunteers have distributed 130 clean-up kits, 30 of them to the town of Brandon. Today, 500 clean-up kits have been delivered to Salvation Army emergency disaster operations in Rutland.
Captain William Thompson, Commander of The Salvation Army's Burlington Corps, and his team provided 162 meals and beverages to flood victims in Rutland from the emergency canteen today.
In Ludlow and Plymouth 141 meals were served today by Lieutenant Jason Brake with his volunteers from Lewiston, ME. Lt. Brake reported, "It was a great day because of the community collaboration. Early this morning, the local Dunkin Donuts brought us fresh donuts and coffee to serve to the victims of Irene. Also, a couple from out of state arrived in town to visit a relative and donated cleaning supplies for us to distribute." Through Labor Day weekend and beyond, The Salvation Army will provide emergency relief to communities still struggling with the devastation left by Hurricane.
Dozens of Salvation Army emergency relief teams and canteens have been deployed to communities throughout the east coast. Some of these communities will need long term recovery assistance due to the amount of damage and flooding caused by Hurricane Irene.
