Cleveland TN Salvation Army Floods; Disaster Unit Dispatched To Fort Ogelthorpe GA

Chattanooga, TN (September 5, 2011) - The Salvation Army often calls for volunteers to provide assistance to others during times of disaster. Now, the Cleveland Salvation Army is calling volunteers to come to the aid of the Army itself at its 437 Inman Stree tlocation. Rising flood waters are already inside the Cleveland headquarters of The Salvation Army, and so far, seventeen volunteers have rushed to assist by moving furniture and filling sandbags to keep the flood at bay.

Cleveland Salvation Army Administrator, Sergeant Ruth Forgey, issued the call for more volunteers. “First and foremost, we call on all our friends to prayer. We need your prayers more than ever, but we also are asking those who are able to come fill sandbags to protect our building and its contents.”

Meanwhile, the Chattanooga Salvation Army is preparing to feed evacuees from the Battle Wood Apartments in Fort Oglethorpeat the request of the North Georgia Red Cross. Salvation Army spokeswoman Kimberly Kyriakidis George says the Red Cross is opening a shelter for evacuees from the apartments and others that may be forced to leave their homes. “We remain in contact with emergency management personnel in Hamilton County, Tennessee and Catoosa County, Georgia, as well as the Red Cross as the rain from Tropical Storm Lee continues to fall in our area.”

The South Chickamauga Creek is expected to crest in flood stage soon and remain at a critical level until Wednesday. The Salvation Army continues its preparations for doing the most good for those in need by readying its mobile kitchen and calling its volunteers to serve when and where needed the most.
