Grafton Salvation Army Provide Food for Two Shelters

Grafton, WV (October 31, 2012) - The Salvation Army in Grafton, West Virginia, is still at work to provide food, water and other necessities to two shelters located in Elkins and Belington, WV.

Last night, with the assistance of the Elkins Fire Department and the Philippi Fire Department, The Salvation Army was able to prepare the food at the stations and deliver it to the two shelters.  Volunteers are preparing to serve another 100 hot meals, bottles of water, fruit and other nonperishable food items, for those still in the shelters.

“Thanks to the support of volunteers and community partners,” said Lt. Benny Carringer, Pastor/Corps Officer of The Salvation Army in Grafton.  “We are thankful to be able to serve others in need, but we know that several counties are still without power and we are urging those to seek shelter.”

Counties and people still without power include:

Barbour County - 6,637
Randolph County - 15,902
Taylor County - 1,591

The Salvation Army will continue to serve our communities.  Monetary donations are the most critical need as supplies and personnel are mobilized.  Here are other ways you can support your local Salvation Army:

  • Donors are encouraged to give online at www.SalvationArmyUSA.org or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769).
  • You can also text the word “STORM” to 80888 to make a $10 donation through your mobile phone; to confirm your gift, respond with the word “Yes.”*
  • Those interested in volunteering should register at www.disaster.salvationarmyusa.org. Please note that disaster service training is a prerequisite for volunteering in a disaster zone and not all registered volunteers will be called on to serve.
  • At this point, in-kind donations, such as used clothing and used furniture, are not being accepted for hurricane relief. However, these items are vital to supporting the day-to-day work of your local Salvation Army. Please consider giving these items to your local Salvation Army Family Store or dial 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825).
  • Checks may be made out to The Salvation Army Disaster Services Center, PO BOX 1959 Atlanta, GA 30301. Please designate “2012 Hurricane Season” on all checks.
  • Corporations, foundations and others interested in donating to The Salvation Army response effort should contact Jaime Joswick, Director of Brand Management for The Salvation Army, at Jaime_Joswick@usn.salvationarmy.org.
