Oklahoma Prepares for Winter Storm
OKLAHOMA CITY (February 24, 2013) - The National Weather Service has issued Blizzard and/or Winter Storm Warnings for Northwestern to Central Oklahoma. A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for most of the rest of Oklahoma and much of Arkansas. Parts of Arkansas are under a flood warning.
Weather Conditions:
An approaching winter storm is due to strike much of Oklahoma tonight through Tuesday. Significant accumulations of snow are expected; in some areas close to 14” is predicted, as well as thunderstorms in portions of Oklahoma as well. Wind gusts of up to 55 mph are expected on during some of the heaviest snow causing white out conditions.
Impacts:
Travel could become impossible in much of Oklahoma including the I-40 corridor west of Oklahoma City. Isolated power outages are possible.
Coordination Efforts:
The Salvation Army is represented at the Oklahoma Emergency Operations Center. The Salvation Army in the Arkansas-Oklahoma Division has taken steps to alert all Corps and Commands of the impending weather as well as providing updated weather conditions to allow each area to prepare in the event they are asked to respond.
Salvation Army personnel will be working with emergency management officials and other VOAD agencies to coordinate services and provide assistance to residents in both Arkansas and Oklahoma due to impending weather conditions.
