The Salvation Army Responds To West Virginia Chemical Leak With Over 12,000 Bottles of Water
Charleston, WV (January 10, 2014) – In West Virginia, a State of Emergency has been issued after an unexpected chemical leak on Thursday, January 9, 2014, banned the use of water to over 100,000 residents in nine counties in the north central portion of the state.
With the support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Guard, Catholic Charities and other nonprofit organizations, water is being distributed throughout the affected areas. Over 12,000 bottles of water arrived at The Salvation Army Charleston Area Command this morning to be distributed throughout the counties with the over 16,000 bottles from FEMA.
The Salvation Army's Beckley Mobile Feeding Unit will be providing manpower and food, donated by Catholic Charities, to feed hundreds of workers and volunteers today for lunch and dinner at the South Charleston Recreational Center on Jefferson Road in Charleston, WV.
A water distribution center is set up and ready to fill containers. The water distribution center is located at:
Putnam County – Hurricane, WV - Walmart
8 a.m. – 8 p.m. (free water up to 20 gallons per person)
It is expected that more water distribution centers will be opened as the day progresses.
