Monroe, LA (10/14/2014) – The Salvation Army is responding to the massive storm that rocked much of the South East over the past few days. The storm dealt an extra heavy blow to North East Louisiana Monday. Governor Bobby Jindal issued a proclamation today declaring a state of emergency as a result of severe weather.
The Salvation Army is already hard at work responding to the needs of the area. The office in the area is headed up by Captain Jerry Williams, a former firefighter and emergency management professional. According to Capt. Jerry Williams, “Tens of thousands are without electric service in the area, and many are likely to be without through Friday. Without power, all the food that was in their refrigerators and freezers will be ruined.” Capt. Williams went on to explain how many people in the area live pay check to paycheck and losing a weeks’ worth of groceries would cause problems for many in the area.
The Salvation Army will begin distributing food boxes Tuesday. In addition to the food boxes, the local Salvation Army will be distributing clean-up kits, to assist those affected by the damages caused by the storms. Capt. Williams added, “People know that when they need help, The Salvation Army is always there.”
