The Salvation Army Carolinas Mobilizes Teams Ahead of Matthew

Charlotte, N.C. (October 7, 2016)—The Salvation Army of the Carolinas has mobilized Salvation Army mobile feeding kitchens and personnel as Hurricane Matthew churns its way up the coast from Florida.  Salvation Army units from North and South Carolina are serving meals at EOC operations and providing mass feeding to support evacuation operations in South Carolina.  In addition, The Salvation Army is also feeding evacuees at shelters as requested by local emergency management. Currently seven mobile feeding kitchens (canteens) are deployed, with canteens and crews from as far away as West Virginia positioned in Raleigh, waiting to support wherever needed.

“We are here, we are ready,” said Major Tom Louden, general secretary for The Salvation Army of the Carolinas. “Our mission is to bring light and hope into the lives of people in their darkest moment. In the days, weeks, and months ahead, The Salvation Army will continue to respond to the physical and spiritual needs of the community.”

When the storm passes and local needs have been determined, EDS teams will serve throughout the impacted region. In the short-term aftermath of the storm, Salvation Army officers and staff will focus primarily on immediate needs providing food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care to impacted individuals and families.
