Brunswick, GA – Marie didn’t ever expect to celebrate her 11th birthday crammed into a house with 18 other family members right after a major hurricane. However, it’s exactly what happened! Four households crammed into one as the power came up for only one home on Sunday.
As The Salvation Army’s Lawrenceville / FedEx canteen pulled up in front of a family member’s home, Marie was curious and excited to watch them pull up. She immediately came out to say hello and find out what The Salvation Army was doing. After serving a few members of her family, the crew learned it was Marie’s birthday. The birthday lunch for Marie included a hot dog, chips, water and some pastries as well as wishing her Happy Birthday.
Even though power is restored in part in Brunswick, many in the Golden Isles corridor remain without power. The Salvation Army will continue to provide food and hydration as well as emotional and spiritual care in the areas where needed.
The Salvation Army continues to serve in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina areas affected by Hurricane Matthew. Your help is needed. The best way to help after a disaster is to make a financial donation. Cash is flexible, can be used immediately in response to a crisis, and allows The Salvation Army to purchase exactly what is needed, when it’s needed. Cash provides the means to procure supplies near the affected area, which cuts down on transportation time and cost. Monetary contributions also support local economies and ensure that businesses can operate when relief supplies diminish.
