Charlotte, N.C. (October 12, 2016)— The Salvation Army has 22 mobile feeding kitchens (canteens) on the road in North and South Carolina, bringing a food, drinks, and a ray of hope to people impacted by Hurricane Matthew. The Salvation Army is serving in multiple locations along the Carolinas coast and eastern North Carolina—from Beaufort, S.C. to Elizabeth City, N.C. and east of I-95—and response is expanding.
The Salvation Army of the Carolinas could not do this alone; teams of Salvation Army officers, employees, and volunteers the Maryland-West Virginia Division, Virginia Division, and Kentucky-Tennessee Division are cheerfully serving alongside crews from the Carolinas.
“The Salvation Army is ONE Army and we are here in force to serve the people,” said Major Tom Louden, general secretary of The Salvation Army of the Carolinas. “When disaster strikes, we pull together. The Carolinas Division is blessed to have volunteers, officers, and employees help us from other divisions. We made the call and they came running to help.”
Crews from every division in the Southern Territory are working together to serve the people in the most need throughout Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
Major Tom Guilliams, a Salvation Army officer from Martinsburg, West Virginia, is serving disaster relief in the Wilmington, North Carolina area and shared his Hot Dog Chili Sauce recipe with us. We could not wait to pass it along!
Major Tom's Hot Dog Chili Sauce
20 lbs. Hamburger meat, crumbled and browned
1 no. 10 can Hunts Tomato Sauce
1 no. 10 can Chili Con Carne without beans
Mix together, simmer and serve. Good for 200 hot dogs
In the weeks ahead, The Salvation Army officers like Major Tom and dedicated employees and volunteers will be cooking up food, feeding the bellies and warming the hearts of the people of the Carolinas who need us the most. The Salvation Army is here and we are serving in His name all who need us. We will continue until we are not needed any more.
How To Help
The best way to help after a disaster is to make a financial donation to the charity of your choice. Monetary contributions also support local economies and ensure that businesses can operate when relief supplies diminish.
