The Salvation Army Supporting Communities After Central Texas Flooding

Dallas, Texas (October 22, 2018) – After almost two weeks of sustained heavy rainfall much of Central Texas has experienced historic flooding. The Salvation Army has continued to monitor the situation closely and over the weekend moved staff and resources into the area to provide support to affected communities.

A tractor trailer loaded with 360 cleanup kits and another containing 24 pallets of water left The Salvation Army disaster warehouse in Arlington on Thursday headed for Marble Falls, located in the heart of Central Texas. Neighboring communities, Llano and Kingsland, also experienced significant flooding from the torrential rains that followed the wettest September on record in Texas. A mobile kitchen and crew has been deployed to provide hot food in the area to those in need.

“Despite the fact that many of The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services staff and direct response teams are still working in Florida after Hurricane Michael, we have mobilized trained staff and volunteers to help those affected by the flooding in Central Texas,” said Captain Jeremy Walker, Salvation Army Officer and Incident Commander. “The Salvation Army has set up a laundry trailer in Kingsland where residents can wash and dry their clothes. We are also providing cleanup kits, water, air mattresses and emergency financial assistance in Kingsland and Llano.”

A Multi Agency Resource Center (MARC) is open at the Llano Events Center on Monday and Tuesday (8 AM-8 PM) where residents can meet with The Salvation Army representatives and receive help and referrals. On Wednesday and Thursday, a MARC providing similar services will open at the Kingsland Community Center (8 AM-8 PM).

“The current relief effort in Central Texas highlights the important role of trained disaster workers,” said Captain Walker. “Our Service Unit staff and volunteers, who have already completed The Salvation Army disaster training, responded to our call for assistance and were ready to get to work helping their neighbors and communities.”
