Salvation Army of Georgia Helps North Georgia Recover after Zeta Impact

Atlanta, GA (Octobe 30, 2020) - The Salvation Army of Georgia is currently providing tarps, clean-up kits and storage bins in north Georgia areas to those affected by the remnants of Hurricane Zeta.

Hurricane Zeta hit the Louisiana coast as a category 2 hurricane but weakened to a tropical storm by the time its rain bands and damaging winds made a brief, but powerful swipe at north Georgia downing many trees and leaving one million people without power. Included in the affected area was the city of Atlanta. This is only the second time the city of Atlanta has been put under a tropical storm warning. The first was in 2017 when Hurricane Irma hit Florida as a category 4 hurricane and swept northward through Georgia. It is estimated that many people will not have power restored until sometime Sunday or Monday.

According to reports, the damage from Tropical Storm Zeta in Georgia is widespread and sporadic across northern Georgia.

“We’re uniquely positioned to provide support and relief to impacted areas throughout the state,” says Lanita Lloyd, Emergency Disaster Services Director for The Salvation Army of Georgia. "With regard to Tropical Storm Zeta, we continue to work with Emergency Disaster Directors, government officials, and officers from The Salvation Army across north Georgia to assess and focus on areas where the need is the greatest.”

As extended power outages through the weekend may create possible food insecurity concerns, The Salvation Army of Georgia looks to expand its relief services by providing food boxes to those in affected areas.
