{"id":12003,"date":"2017-09-01T14:06:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T14:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salarmyeds.org\/?p=12003"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:09:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T14:09:05","slug":"compassionate-care-for-hurricane-harvey-survivors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salarmyeds.org\/index.php\/2017\/09\/01\/compassionate-care-for-hurricane-harvey-survivors\/","title":{"rendered":"Compassionate Care for Hurricane Harvey Survivors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Corpus Christi, TX &#8211; <\/strong>Eleven mobile feeding kitchens (canteens) are on the ground in the Coastal Bend Area providing desperately needed food and water for people impacted by Hurricane Harvey.\u00a0 Just as importantly, they are providing compassion and the love of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Salvation Army has an \u201carmy\u201d of personnel serving in communities impacted near the eye of the storm.&nbsp; Crews on mobile feeding units are serving many, including people in apartment complexes that are still without power, and a lady from Rockport who rode out the storm in a small metal building with her cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are a few eyewitness reports from Salvation Army crews on the ground:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When a catering truck (mobile feeding unit) pulled through a neighborhood, one of the ladies where they stopped and were visiting through the window said, \u201cI have water and some food, everything I need.\u201d\u00a0 As the truck pulled away, she put her hand over her heart.\u00a0 Marcella, one of the crew members, stopped the truck asked if she was okay.\u00a0 \u201cThe Salvation Army just brings back memories.\u00a0 My in-laws were involved with The Salvation Army in Oklahoma and Georgia.\u00a0 We lost my mother-in-law about three years ago in her nineties,\u201d the lady said. \u201cShe just loved being part of The Salvation Army!\u201d \u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Salvation Army crew from Muskogee, Oklahoma reports serving twin brothers who used to be singers.\u00a0 The twins began singing \u201cOkie from Muskogee\u201d as the crew provided a meal, water and some snacks.\u00a0\u00a0 The brothers have lost most of their home and things, yet they are in the neighborhood joyfully helping others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0\u201cGive me a high five!\u00a0 We are going to get food now \u2013 Oklahoma is here,\u201d shouted one group of neighbors as the canteen pulled up to the neighborhood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One man started crying after he and his wife received sandwiches.\u00a0 The crew serving them has been there three days in a row so a relationship has begun.\u00a0 It turns out, the couple has donated to The Salvation Army at times.\u00a0 \u201cIt is just so nice to see you are here,\u201d he stated after they all prayed together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI\u2019ve been eating beans out of a can for three days.\u00a0 Having a hot meal is so appreciated,\u201d were the words shared to one of our crews.\u00a0 At the same apartment complex, the crew found some people trying to cook on a tiny little charcoal grill.\u00a0 \u201cWe have just been trying to cook enough to keep food in peoples\u2019 bellies\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThank you so very much for coming out to feed us and make sure we are okay.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And many of our crews\u2019 report being asked for photographs with their canteens, receiving an abundance of people saying, \u201cThank you!\u201d for coming in to help Texas!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas, The Salvation Army is here to help and we will be here for as long as you need us as you rebuild.
