Lumberton, NC\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Already struggling\u00a0neighborhoods face an uncertain future with even less. The floodwaters from Hurricane Florence\u2019s slow trail dropped enough rain for the\u00a0Lumber River to reach near-record flood levels. \u00a0Lumber River and its tributaries topped their banks spilling murky water across much of the area\u2014ravaging homes, businesses, places of worship, and leaving its mark on thousands of lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you don\u2019t have much, anything you lose is too much,\u201d said Lilly Rose as she stood in line for a hot meal from The Salvation Army\u2019s canteen (mobile kitchen).  Rose went on, \u201cYou\u2019re like a God-send to us here.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not LIKE a God-send, we ARE a God-send, sent and directed by God\u201d replied Captain Rick Boone.  \u201cBut I know what you mean, thank you,\u201d he quickly added with a smile.   Boone arrived in Lumberton today from Knoxville, Tennessee as part of the reinforcements sent to expand service throughout Robeson County.  Boone immediately went to work on a canteen, roving neighborhoods where the water had receded enough to return. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rose shared that the water got into her home, but not to the second floor where she and her grandson waited safely for the water to retreat.  \u201cI know it may not seem like much to others, but to us, it\u2019s a lot,\u201d Rose said.   \u201cWe\u2019re glad we\u2019re safe, and everyone we know made it.\u201d  With Florence’s death toll topping 30, this is an important reminder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs sad as I am about what we lost, my job keeps me up at night,\u201d Rose said, \u201cThe store where I work flooded and the owner told me not to come in.  I\u2019m not sure when or even if it will open back up.\u201d  The loss of income compounds the loss of property, punctuated with the loss of tokens of the past\u2014memories of family trips and loved ones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re safe and you\u2019ve given us a delicious meal, we\u2019re going to be OK,\u201d Rose said to Boone.  \u201cGod Loves you and as His children, so do we,\u201d Boone replied.  After a short prayer, they parted, Rose to her dark, wet home and Boone to deliver a meal to another hurting neighbor Rose was worried about.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGod is good, even when we don\u2019t understand His plan,\u201d Boone is overheard saying as the door closed.  And, of course, he\u2019s right.  The Salvation Army\u2019s mission is to \u201cmeet human need in His name without discrimination,\u201d and seldom is that more evident than in times of disaster.<\/p>\n
