{"id":12924,"date":"2018-10-03T17:52:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T17:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/salarmyeds.org\/?p=12924"},"modified":"2026-10-05T17:55:22","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T17:55:22","slug":"tragedy-in-the-midst-of-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salarmyeds.org\/index.php\/2018\/10\/03\/tragedy-in-the-midst-of-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"Tragedy In The Midst of Disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conway, SC &#8212; <\/strong>Crisis serves to focus your attention \u2013 this is true for those in the midst of the crisis and those surrounded by it, responding to it. \u00a0During these times, it is easy to forget much of the world continues to move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When waist-deep in crisis \u2013 in the case of the flooding after Hurricane Florence this is both figurative and literal \u2013 you can become laser focused on a goal. &nbsp;That focus might be finding your next meal, or in the case of responders, serving that next meal. &nbsp;There is no comparison to those who lost everything to disaster, but it is fair to say empathy with survivors paired with compassionate service is exhausting. &nbsp;Empathy and the burning desire to do all that can be done creates its own kind of crisis-based tunnel vision.<br><br>Focus on service to others is nothing new to The Salvation Army. &nbsp;From its very beginnings, \u201cOthers\u201d has been a rallying cry for weary bodies in the thick of it. &nbsp;But when deployed on disaster duty, responders are separated from their routine and their support network. &nbsp;This has the advantage of allowing focus on the important task at hand; but also has the disadvantage of allowing focus on the important task at hand. &nbsp;Zooming in on the need and response to the need; not seeing the world in the periphery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the case when personal tragedy snapped the tunnel vision of a responder on a Salvation Army canteen (mobile kitchen) serving meals in Horry County. &nbsp;Focused on getting the canteen loaded with the day\u2019s lunch, Robert \u2013 a trained disaster responder from Athens, Georgia mindlessly answered his phone. &nbsp;\u201cWhat?!?\u201d he exclaimed into his phone as his eyes snapped into focus searching for Leila, his wife&nbsp;and partner in life, and on the canteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Robert and Leila were focused on their response to disaster survivors, the rest of the world moved on. &nbsp;The morning\u2019s call, mindlessly answered, now commands its own laser-like focus. &nbsp;Robert\u2019s \u201cbaby sister\u201d passed away moments before the call \u2013 an unforeseen shock to the family. &nbsp;Those who had worked alongside of Robert and Leila saw the physical change and responded immediately. &nbsp; A community of faith, they turned to God &#8212; not for explanation, but for comfort and strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robert and Leila have no regrets about where they were at the moment, and arrangements were quickly made to get them back home. &nbsp;Crisis focuses attention\u2026even when the subject of that attention changes. &nbsp;But, The Salvation Army remains focused on others, serving them without discrimination in Jesus\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<div class=\"credits-overlay\" data-target=\".wp-image-12925\">The Salvation Army<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Conway, SC &#8212; Crisis serves to focus your attention \u2013 this is true for those in the midst of the crisis and those surrounded by it, responding to it. \u00a0During these times, it is easy to forget much of the world continues to move forward.
