Volunteers from The Salvation Army Buchanan Service Unit are providing emergency assistance to those affected by flooding in southwestern Virginia. On July 12, 2022, a storm dumped 4-6 inches of rain in a short period of time. The resulting floods and mudslides impacted more than 100 homes, plus roads and bridges. Power has been restored in the affected area. Water outages remain, resulting in a boil water advisory for the area. The county is providing potable water to affected homes for the immediate future.

The Salvation Army has a table at the intake center and works in partnership with local authorities to conduct casework for affected families. The center was set up last week and will continue for the rest of this week and possibly the following week.

Current local efforts are focused on debris removal, and in the coming weeks, there will be teams on site to assist with mucking and gutting of homes and beginning the recovery activities. The Salvation Army continues to coordinate with the local authorities and our partners in the region.
