September 11

The Salvation Army was one the first emergency disaster relief organizations on site in New York after the September 11th attacks. Within 30 minutes of the first plane hitting the World Trade Center tower, canteens arrived on site to provide coffee, sandwiches, and words of comfort and encouragement to stunned and disoriented survivors and the countless rescue workers now pouring in. The Salvation Army assisted more than 2,150 individuals in the initial 18 hours of service. As the days stretched on, services expanded to include rest stations for first responders and clean up crews as well as providing steel-toed boots, socks, eye drops, and other needed items.

Salvation Army teams also responded immediately to the Pentagon, offering emotional and spiritual care to those who had been inside the building and to those who were still searching the rubble. The Salvation Army assumed the enormous responsibility of coordinating all food service efforts with other agencies. Additionally, response teams offered practical support including changes of clothes for rescue and recovery workers and prepaid phone cards for military and recovery workers to allow them to contact family and friends.

Within hours of the plane crash in Pennsylvania, The Salvation Army arrived on scene and stayed round-the-clock until Sept 25. This effort included meal service, socks, hand-warmers, and phone cards for first responders and those at the staging locations for families of the victims.

More than 39,000 Salvation Army officers, volunteers, and staff served 3.2 million meals during the months that followed.  Perhaps most importantly, Salvation Army personnel provided emotional and spiritual counseling and support to thousands of rescue and recovery-personnel.  In total, The Salvation Army spent $90 million serving first responders, survivors, and affected families with food, clothing, financial assistance, and other crucial social service programs.
