Heartland Tornadoes

On December 10, a devastating EF4 tornado, part of a larger outbreak, carved a 165 mile path across 11 counties in western Kentucky and Tennessee. Part of a larger outbreak with 71 confirmed tornadoes across several states, the area around Mayfield, Kentucky saw the bulk of the damage.

The Salvation Army had EDS teams on the ground quickly, and service areas were expanded as roads were cleared of debris to grant access. One immediate need was clothing vouchers. “People left their homes in the middle of the night wearing their pajamas. The best way we could provide hope at that moment was to meet their immediate need – clothing, coats, shoes. We opened our Family Store and began giving clothes away and we haven’t stopped,” explained a local officer.
