This past weekend, severe weather and multiple tornadoes devastated parts of Mississippi and Alabama, leaving behind a trail of destruction. In the aftermath, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) teams immediately mobilized to provide critical relief to those in need.

Within hours of the storm’s impact, Salvation Army teams were already on the ground. Cindy Smith and her team from Walker County were the first responders, starting services the morning after the storm. Captain Johnny Anthony from the Greenwood Corps also hit the ground running, distributing water to the community and providing hotel and food vouchers to families impacted by the storms.

Brenda Kates and her team from McComb were on the scene right away, assessing damages and coordinating with county and state agencies to distribute clean-up kits. By March 18th, The Salvation Army had delivered over 100 clean-up kits to help with the ongoing recovery efforts. The Salvation Army is also working on procuring gift cards to support affected families with their immediate and longer-term needs.

In Sipsey, AL, the team has offered counseling and comfort while distributing meals, drinks, and hygiene kits. So far, over 600 meals and 1,700 plus hydration products have been served, along with dozens of hygiene kits to families in need.

Governor Tate Reeves toured the communities impacted by the storm and met with The Salvation Army team on the ground, declaring the affected communities disaster zones. The Salvation Army continues coordinating with local and state emergency agencies to Ensure a coordinated and comprehensive response.

Throughout the disaster response, volunteers, donors, and Salvation Army staff have worked together to ensure that those affected by the tornadoes are supported throughout the process.
