Dallas, Texas – As power has now been restored to much of the previously flooded area of South Texas, recovery is ongoing for many homeowners and businesses. While the need for mass meal service has been significantly reduced over the weekend, local Salvation Army units in Harlingen and McAllen continue to provide food boxes and cleanup kits to those impacted.

As of Sunday, April 6, five Salvation Army mobile feeding units and teams that had served all week in the Rio Grande Valley were demobilized and returned home. In addition, the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention field kitchen provided their last meal on Saturday. All ongoing assistance will be managed by The Salvation Army locations in McAllen and Harlingen, utilizing three mobile feeding units.

“The last week or so has seen an extensive and widespread response from The Salvation Army after flooding devastated the Rio Grande Valley. We say thank you to Salvation Army staff and volunteers from throughout the state who deployed to South Texas and worked tirelessly to help their fellow Texans. In little over a week, The Salvation Army provided more than 42,000 meals,” said Alvin Migues, Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services Director in Texas. “That work is not done! Our local teams in Harlingen, McAllen and Port Isabel were among the first to respond, and they continue working in their own communities to provide relief, strength, and encouragement to those affected.

Since response efforts began after the flooding, The Salvation Army has served 42,090 meals, 40,140 drinks, and 20,134 snacks. Supply distribution is ongoing with 622 cleanup kits, 597 hygiene kits, and 384 being handed out so far. Emotional and Spiritual Care is an integral part of Salvation Army disaster support, and more than 630 individuals have received prayer and counseling.

Meals, hydration, and relief supply distribution is available at the following locations:

  • Hidalgo County – The Salvation Army McAllen, 1600 N 23rd Street
  • Cameron and Willacy Counties – The Salvation Army Harlingen, 119 E. Monroe
