Charlotte, North Carolina (October 10, 2025)–One year after Hurricane Helene devastated communities across North and South Carolina, The Salvation Army of the Carolinas has added two Long-Term Recovery Program Coordinators to its Emergency Disaster Services team. These coordinators will represent The Salvation Army in ongoing recovery meetings across impacted counties, collaborating with disaster case managers and community organizations to identify service gaps and provide critical financial assistance for families rebuilding their lives.

Dr. Valerie Boyd brings 14 years of emergency management experience to her role as Long-term Recovery Program Specialist for South Carolina. A retired U.S. Coast Guard officer, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, a Master of Arts in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and completed her doctorate in Industrial and Organizational Psychology in 2024.
Her distinguished Coast Guard career includes serving as the lead representative on the Joint Search and Rescue Task Force during Hurricane Katrina, where coordinated efforts resulted in over 24,000 rescues and 9,000 medical evacuations. As Coast Guard Liaison Officer to FEMA from 2016-2018, she led a team of 50 watch officers during responses to Hurricanes Matthew, Harvey, Irma, and Maria, coordinating over $225 million in disaster relief funding that impacted 25.8 million survivors.
“I have always felt a calling to serve others,” said Dr. Boyd. “After retiring from the Coast Guard, I was drawn to The Salvation Army’s mission. My passion for helping disaster survivors is fueled by a sincere desire to help others in their greatest time of need.”
