Oklahoma City, OK (1/24/26)  A major, long-duration winter storm system is affecting both Arkansas and Oklahoma, having brought extreme cold, heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerous wind chills. Both states are under Winter Storm Warnings, with icy conditions and widespread travel hazards expected to persist into next week.

Across the Arkansas-Oklahoma Division (AOK), temperatures are well below freezing and are not expected to rise above freezing for most of the week. Heavy snowfall and strong winds are creating hazardous travel conditions and increasing public safety risks.

Arkansas

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has declared a state of emergency due to the anticipated severity of the winter weather, citing concerns about public safety, fuel supply disruptions, and hazardous travel conditions.

Oklahoma

Governor Kevin Stitt has deployed Stranded Motorist Assistance Recovery Teams statewide in response to deteriorating road conditions. Stranded motorists are being transported to nearby warming centers, including several operated by The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army AOK is actively collaborating with state and local partners, including Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), to address community needs during this winter weather event. Efforts are focused on providing warmth and safety and coordinating services for vulnerable populations and those affected by the storm.

Across the division, Salvation Army locations are operating shelters and warming centers for their communities. Meals, snacks, blankets, coats, hats, and gloves, along with other essential items, are being provided. Mobile feeding units are on standby.

Shelters:

  • Ardmore, OK
  • Bentonville, AR
  • El Dorado, AR
  • Enid, OK
  • Fayetteville, AR
  • Fort Smith, AR
  • Jonesboro, AR
