Charlotte, NC (January 30, 2026)-On the heels of last week’s Winter Storm Fern, The Salvation Army of the Carolinas is preparing for another round of extreme winter weather forecast to affect both North and South Carolina. All counties in the Carolinas are under a winter weather warning. Unusually heavy snow combined with very cold temperatures will cause rapid ice formation on roads and other surfaces, making travel dangerous.
“Temperatures are already well below normal and will remain frigid through the weekend. On top of that, snow is forecast throughout the Carolinas,” said Mike Patterson, emergency disaster services director for The Salvation Army of the Carolinas. “Right now, Salvation Army corps across both states are working with emergency management partners to ensure critical assistance is available for vulnerable populations.”
Twelve locations throughout the Carolinas have maintained their warming shelters and overnight shelters or increased capacity since last week’s storm. Additional locations stand ready to provide support at a moment’s notice. Because The Salvation Army already has a presence in these communities, operations can be scaled up quickly upon request from local emergency management, once roads are safe for travel.
Throughout the weekend, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services teams across the Carolinas will closely monitor the storm’s progression and community impacts, coordinating with local authorities to provide support to those in need.
