Oklahoma City, OK (1/31/26) — Record-setting winter weather continues to affect communities across Arkansas and Oklahoma, as The Salvation Army remains actively engaged in relief and recovery efforts. On January 24, much of the division experienced historic snowfall from Winter Storm Fern, while south-central Oklahoma saw significant ice accumulation that caused property damage and economic disruption across multiple counties.

In response to the arctic weather, The Salvation Army supported warming centers and shelters throughout the division, helping individuals and families find safety from the dangerous conditions. Although widespread power outages were limited, ice-related damage affected several businesses, causing unexpected hardship for workers.

One of the more significant impacts occurred in Madill, Oklahoma, where Stryve Foods, sustained damage to their facility resulting in production being fully suspended while they assess the impact and begin repairs. With employees suddenly facing a loss of income, The Salvation Army joined community partners on Friday for a Rapid Response Event to connect affected workers with immediate support and long-term recovery resources.

Services offered at the event included:

  • Referrals to community resource organizations
  • CareerTech training and tuition assistance
  • Résumé support through the Oklahoma Works Mobile Unit
  • Assistance filing unemployment claims
  • Dislocated worker training resources

Through this coordinated effort, The Salvation Army provided direct financial assistance to more than 225 individuals. Beyond material aid, emotional and spiritual care was offered. Staff described an atmosphere filled with hugs, tears, and heartfelt gratitude as neighbors came together during a difficult time.

As workers gathered for assistance, the center became more than a place to access resources. It served as an opportunity for displaced employees to reconnect and check in with one another. New arrivals were greeted with hugs and words of encouragement from coworkers, and conversations naturally turned to how people were coping and updates on family members. The atmosphere reflected the strength of community during a difficult time and underscored the importance of providing support beyond material aid.

One staff member shared the story of a gentleman who, while completing his assistance form, expressed deep relief. He said the support felt like an answered prayer, explaining that he had been asking for just a little help as he determined his next steps. He repeated, “God is faithful. He will provide.”

A supervisor overseeing a team of 40 employees shared similar sentiments, saying, “Everyone I’ve talked to has said the assistance means a lot, and they feel very blessed to receive help and to know that The Salvation Army was praying for them.”

As another wave of extreme cold is forecast for the region this weekend, The Salvation Army will continue to meet urgent physical needs and offer emotional and spiritual care to those facing uncertainty and loss.
