SOUTHFIELD, MICH (April 2, 2025) – The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division is pooling resources from across the state to help areas of Northern Michigan hit by the recent ice storm. The storm, which struck over the weekend, left tens of thousands without power, natural gas, and, in some areas, even water. In many areas, downed trees are making travel impossible, and gas is not available.
Like many residents, most Northern Michigan Salvation Army Corps and Community Centers, were also left without power, so areas that weren’t impacted are coming together to provide support for many still trapped in the icy grip of the storm.
- With assistance from The Salvation Army in Bay City, teams from Plymouth are making a 260-mile round trip once a day to deliver hot meals to shelters serving hundreds in Montmorency County.
- Captain Greg Bock of The Salvation Army in Cadillac is traveling to Cheboygan to retrieve food items before they spoil and recruiting Cadillac area restaurants who are cooking the food for free, to provide hot meals and their canteen as needed to first responders and line workers.
- Hundreds of food boxes from Detroit are on their way to Gaylord, where one shelter is housing 100 plus residents.
- Even after they lost power, The Salvation Army in Alpena, was providing food items to area shelters that didn’t have enough food. Their power has now been restored, and they are providing food in Presque Isle County where most residents still have no power.
- In Petoskey, while under generator power with no running water, the Corps is still able to provide food pantry items and hot meals to shelters. Some of the food boxes from Detroit will also be distributed to first responders and others affected in the Petoskey area.
- The Salvation Army in Traverse City is preparing their mobile canteen to send to Gaylord.
