The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Response Team Responds to Flooding Across Louisiana and Mississippi

After recent tropical storm flooding brought heavy rain and rising water to communities across the South, many families are now facing the difficult work of cleaning out water-damaged homes and beginning the recovery process.

Tropical Storm Arthur was short-lived, but its impact was not. Though the storm weakened quickly, it left behind a serious flooding threat across the South. For many families, the damage was not from wind, but from water — water in streets, neighborhoods, and homes.

The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services teams are responding in impacted communities across Louisiana and Mississippi, including Houma, Simmesport, St. Charles Parish, Perkinston, and Avondale, providing practical support where it is needed most.

In disasters like this, the need can change quickly. At this stage of response, mass feeding is not the primary need. For many families, the most urgent concern is water inside their homes and the long, exhausting process of cleanup.

To help meet that need, The Salvation Army is providing cleanup kits in affected areas, including more than 200 kits to Houma and Simmesport, Louisiana. These kits provide practical supplies to help families begin removing debris, cleaning damaged areas, and taking the first steps toward making their homes safe again.

In Simmesport, approximately 100 homes have been impacted. In St. Charles Parish, LA, more than 140 homes have been affected. Additional response efforts have included support from The New Orleans Area Command for a residential area in Avondale, LA, decimated by tornado damage.

The Salvation Army is on the ground, working with state and partner agencies to monitor ongoing and evolving needs in impacted communities.

For The Salvation Army, disaster response is more than delivering supplies. It is about showing up for neighbors in moments of crisis with practical help and hope. When families are left wondering where to begin, The Salvation Army comes alongside them with support and a reminder that they are not alone.

Recovery will take time, but hope is already at work through the hands of staff, volunteers, partners, and community members serving those affected. The Salvation Army will continue to assess needs and provide assistance as communities begin the long road forward.
